Ryan Grantham has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his mother, Barbara Waite, who was 64 years old in 2020. He was given a life sentence in the British Columbia Supreme Court in Vancouver, and, per the terms of the sentence, he will not be eligible for parole for 14 years.
The actor’s hearing started on 13th June 2022, for the crime occurred on 31st March 2020. The court reportedly learned that Ryan rehearsed the murder and took videos throughout the time, including one in which he confessed, which showed his mother’s body.
Ryan also confessed that he loaded his car with three guns, ammunition, and camping supplies with several Molotov Cocktails the following day, intended to travel to Rideau Cottage, Ottawa, to kill Justin Trudeau (Canadian Prime Minister). He wrote about his goal in a journal. However, he instead turned himself into the police in Vancouver.
According to Ryan’s psychiatric reports in June, he was going through an “intense period of clinical depression” before the murder, with “urges to commit violence and kill himself.” He allegedly decided to kill his mother, battling cancer at the time, “to spare her from seeing the violence he intended to commit.”
In the courtroom, when the judge asked Ryan several questions, one of which was whether he was aware that a plea of guilty to second-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence with around 10 and 25 years of parole ineligibility.
