Emmanuel Gazmey Santiago, professionally known as Anuel AA, is a rapper and singer of Puerto Rican origin. At fourteen, he started recording music and posting it online. In 2010, he got an opportunity to sign with American rapper Rick Ross’s Maybach Music Group. In 2018, Anuel released his debut album Real Hasta la Muerte, which included popular singles like “Ella Quiere Beber” and “Brindemos.”
Anuel got global success after he released the song “China” in collaboration with Ozuna, Karol G, Daddy Yankee, and J Balvin. This song’s music video earned over 1 billion views on YouTube. Anuel started his music career when he was in his teens. In February 2016, his mixtape, Real Hasta La Muerte, was released and got many positive reviews from critics. The success of this mixtape landed Anuel in Ozuna’s 2017 album Odisea as a featured guest.
On 17th July 2018, he released his debut album Real Hasta la Muerte. The album was released on the day he was out of prison; he was sentenced to 30 months for illegally possessing three firearms. This album peaked at number 42 on the Billboard 200 and topped the US Top Latin Albums chart. The artist’s release from prison and the album’s popularity garnered significant media attention, and Anuel was surprised by the public response. In January 2020, Anuel collaborated with Shakira on the song “Me Gusta.” In Bad Bunny’s 2020 album YHLQMDLG, he also featured in the song “Está Cabrón Ser Yo.” On 3rd April 2020, Anuel released “3 De Abril,” which memorializes the day that the rapper was arrested, leading to prison time. On 27th May 2020, Anuel announced the tracklist for his second album, Emmanuel, which was later released on 29th May. Originally, the album was all set to be released in April but was postponed due to the pandemic. The album was released by promoting the launch of three luxury yachts off the coast of Miami’s Isle of Normandy neighborhood. Each yacht was named Emmanuel on the side and played his music at high volume. The 22-track double album features collaborations from Bad Bunny, Tego Calderón, Enrique Iglesias, Travis Barker, Lil Wayne, Karol G, Farruko, Yandel, and Ñengo Flow.
In November 2020, Anuel expressed in an Instagram post that he was retiring from the music industry. Later on 19th November, he released a new track, “Me Contagie 2”, which discusses depression and unhappiness with his relationships; And how his career often takes him away from his young son, who has asked him to retire.
