Chesney learned to play the guitar after receiving one as a Christmas present, and he went on to play football and baseball at Gibbs High School, where he graduated in 1986. After that, he entered East Tennessee State University. 

He then entered East Tennessee State University, where he earned a bachelor’s in advertising in 1990. He was also a part of the ETSU Bluegrass Program and the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity while in college. When Kenny performed at Johnson City clubs in 1989, he filmed a demo and distributed 1,000 copies to the crowd. After graduation, he moved to Nashville and started working at local nightclubs, honing his skills.

In 1992, Chesney tried out for Troy Tomlinson of Opryland Music Group and went back with a songwriter’s agreement. The following year, he was hired to Capricorn Records following a songwriter’s show. In 1994, he published his debut album, “In My Wildest Dreams,” which sold 10,000 sets before Capricorn closed its Nashville country music class. On May 9, 2005, four months after meeting her at a tsunami relief, Kenny endorsed actress Renée Zellweger. In 2000, Chesney and Tim McGraw were caught after getting in strife with New York police officers after Kenny soared on top of a police horse and road beyond. They charged Chesney with disruptive conduct and McGraw with assault, but both men were acquitted the following year.
