Jonny Pierce and Jacob Graham are the founding members of the Drum band; they became friends as children after a meeting at Bible camp at the age of 11 or 12. After some years, they formed an electro-pop group named Goat Explosion, then renamed Elkland. In 2005, they released one album, Golden, and it garnered interest with the single “Apart” from the album. This group was a short-lived one.
Later in 2008, Jonny and Jacob thought of a concept for The Drums. Jonny moved to Kissimmee, Florida, where Jacob resided, so they could collaborate nicely on this new concept. Further, in the 2009 spring, both moved to Brooklyn, where Connor Hanwick, a drummer and Adam Kessler, a former Elkland guitarist, joined the band to complete their live sound. The formed band made their first gig within a week of arriving in Brooklyn at Cake Shop NYC, a part of the NYC Pop Fest.
