Rams head coach Sean McVay explained why Cam Akers didn’t see the field more during Week 1 against the Indianapolis Colts.

Akers, the Rams’ second-round pick in this year’s draft, was active for the game but only played four snaps on offense. He didn’t have any touches.

After the game, McVay was asked about Akers’ role and why he didn’t see the field more against the Colts.

“It was just how the flow of the game went,” McVay said. “We didn’t get a ton of plays off, offensively. We were rolling with Malcolm (Brown) and Darrell (Henderson) when we did.

“Cam did a great job in there,” McVay continued. “We’ve got confidence in all three of those guys. We’ll continue to roll them the way we see fit.”

Akers’ four snaps on offense were tied for the fewest among Rams running backs. Henderson played 19 snaps, and Brown played 17.

Henderson had 14 carries for 40 yards and a touchdown, while Brown had eight carries for 44 yards. Akers didn’t have any carries.

The Rams ran the ball 31 times as a team against the Colts. Akers’ lack of playing time was likely because the Rams were trying to get Henderson and Brown more work early in the season.

Akers is expected to see a bigger role as the season goes on. He’s the Rams’ best running back and should be in line for a significant workload once he gets more comfortable with the offense.

For now, Akers will have to wait his turn behind Henderson and Brown.
