Pachinko is an adaptation of Min Lee’s book of the same name and tells the story of a young girl whose destiny changes after World War II. Her family leaves home to secure their future, but soon enough, they realize that war is everywhere, and they have to fight for their chance to co-exist in Japan. However, Soo Hugh, Pachinko’s creator, said that his plan is for the drama series to run for four seasons as he is dedicated to the characters’ growth. She thinks she is better off once she reaches Japan, only to realize that maybe her country was much better as the hate harbored against Korean by the Japanese is unmatched. When Hansu, a Korean Merchant with a wealthy Japanese background, enters the picture, her life is about to be an adventure.

Pachinko Season 1 Recap:
The series follows the life of Sunja, the main protagonist, from childhood to old age. Sunja, portrayed by Youn Yuh-jung, an Oscar-winning actress from “Minari,” experiences the colonization of Korea by Japan in the 1910s. The first episode delves into this hostile invasion and Sunja’s determination to help her family thrive. Along the way, she learns the art of fishing and befriends a local fisherman. The harshness of Japanese police and the prevalent poverty highlight the struggles of a nation.
In 1989, Sunja has become a wise and respected grandmother. The show seamlessly transitions between her present and the events of the 1910s in “Chapter One.” The focus in the eighties is on her grandson Solomon Baek, who is educated in America and works as a banker. Solomon is sent to Tokyo to finalize a deal with a stubborn Korean landowner, which leads to a reunion with his family. Meanwhile, his father Baek Mozasu owns a Pachinko Parlour (Japanese arcades), which gives the book its name. However, Solomon remains cautious about his father’s expanding empire.
The season finale of “Pachinko” showcases key moments of transition for different members of the Kim-Baek family. In 1938, Sunja steps up as the provider for her family, and her child with Koh Hansu, Noa, is introduced. As Japan prepares for World War II, life becomes even more challenging for Korean immigrants. In 1989, Solomon becomes aware of an impending storm and realizes that it’s time for him to mature and take responsibility.
