Songwriter Andy Stone sued Mariah Carey in June; he claimed to co-wrote a song with the same name 5 years earlier. This allegation was dropped on Tuesday by him.
We are talking about Mariah’s hit playlist, one of best known Christmas records of all time. In 1994, since appearing on the album Merry Christmas, this song had topped the charts in numerous countries and by 2017 had reportedly earned Mariah around $60m in royalties.
According to the rolling eye, Andy claimed at least $20m in damages, arguing that Mariah exploited his style and popularity. However, it’s not confirmed whether he has received any claim amount after the judgment.
Though the title is the same as claimed by Andy but both songs are musically different. He also claimed that she did not ask permission to use the song name and had, over the years, earned “undeserved profits” from his work.
It is common to have the same name for different songs, and the United States Copyright Office has 177 entries on its website under the same title as All I Want for Christmas is You.
