In 1995, Gavin’s first political experience came when he volunteered for a successful campaign for mayor Willie Brown. Later, at his PlumpJack Café, Gavin also hosted a private fundraiser. In 1996, Brown appointed him to a vacant Parking and Traffic Commission seat. Further, he was elected president of the commission. Brown appointed Gavin to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors seat the following year.
