In the 2009 Major League Baseball draft Matt was selected in the 13th round by the St. Louis Cardinals. He spent his 1st professional season with several A-level teams, including the Quad Cities River Bandits, Batavia Muckdogs, and the Palm Beach Cardinals. Between the three clubs, Matt batted .283 with 2 home runs and 22 RBIs. Further, in 2010, he returned to Palm Beach and played over 28 games; he hit .283, drawing 26 walks, which placed his OBP at .441.
This resulted in playing in the Springfield Cardinals. He played in 105 games and batted .316 with 76 runs scored, 12 home runs, 26 doubles, 53 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases. The team announced on Tuesday that the San Diego Padres signed free agent Matt Carpenter (37) to a one-year contract for the coming 2023 season; the contract includes a player option for 2024.
Terms of the contract were not disclosed officially, but through sources, the deal would pay Matt around $6 million in 2023 and another $6 million in 2024 if he opts in.
