Mark Calderon Career:
Mark started his career when he was in high school in Oklahoma City. Kevin “K.T.” Thornton, Bryan Abrams, Sam Watters, and Mark Calderon were all in the school choir in the mid-1980. They formed a contemporary R&B group band in 1985 under its original name, Take One. The group then changed the name to Color Me Badd to avoid confusion with a similar band, Take 6. Watters selected this name after a horse on a track had the name ‘Color Me Badd.’ The Color Me Badd group first performed in a school talent show.
The group planned everything for their career, and they started giving auditions for big-name acts playing in Oklahoma. On 27th May 1987, they met Robert Bell of ‘kool & the gang’ in Oklahoma City during a performance. Robert introduced them to Adil Bayyan, who became the Color Me Badd manager. Adil convinced them to pursue a record deal in New York City. They sang for Sheila E., Ronnie Milsap, Huey Lewis and the News during those times.
In 1989, Thornton was in a movie theater and saw Jon Bon Jovi and immediately called the other members of his band. They all waited for him outside the theatre and sang a doo-wop hit, “Daddy’s Home,” of 1961. Bon was impressed and invited them to perform for an opening act the following night, in front of 20000 audiences. The same year on 23rd September, they moved to New York City.
In 1990, they achieved an ASCAP Music Award. At that event, Color Me Badd talked with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and started working as a singer for them. Being a Multicultural group, these producers advised them to write a half-English and half-Spanish song. “I Adore Mi Amor” is the output of this advice. On 11th August 1990, Cassandra Mills (Giant Records executive) heard a recorded band song, and they signed with them. Mills then asked producer Dr. Freeze to record a song for the New Jack City soundtrack, which should be similar to “Do Me!”. The song “I Wanna Sex You Up” became the Color Me Badd’s debut, released on 2nd March 1991. It was the biggest hit on the New Jack City soundtrack. This hit was number 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and number two on the Billboard Hot 100. after looking at the song’s popularity, giant records wanted to quickly record an album. At that time, they had approximately four finished songs, so the band went to a studio in Los Angeles and recorded the album in two to three weeks.
On 23rd July 1991, the group’s debut album ‘C.M.B.’ was released and sold six million-plus copies worldwide. The band achieved triple-platinum certification in the U.S. after spending 77 weeks on the Billboard 200 as number 3. Songs like “I Adore Mi Amor,” “All 4 Love”, “Thinkin Back,” and “Slow Motion” all were a hit on the Hot 100 and the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts.
In 1991, the Color Me Badd performed at the Smash Hits Poll Winners’ Awards Organized in the united kingdom and won the Best New Group trophy. The band won the Best R&B/Soul Single and the R&B/Soul Song of the Year in a group for the “I Wanna Sex You Up” song. They achieved Soul Train Music Awards. At the Grammy Awards of 1991, the Color Me Badd band was nominated for Best R&B Performance by a Duo/ Group and Best New Artist. At the 1992 American Music Awards, they won Favorite Soul/R&B Single for “I Wanna Sex You Up.” in the same award function; they were nominated for Favorite Pop/Rock Single, Favorite Pop/Rock Band/Duo/Group, Favorite Pop/Rock New Artist and Favorite Soul/R&B New Artist.
The band performed at halftime of Super Bowl XXVI on 26th January 1992. The group also performed for episodes of Beverly Hills, 90210. On 24th November 1992, the band released a remix album Young, Gifted & Badd: The Remixes. This remix also hit number 189 on the Billboard 200. On 24th November 1992, Color Me Badd released a remix album entitled ‘Young, Gifted & Badd: The Remixes.’ It includes the single “Forever Love,” which reached number 15 on the Hot 100 and was featured on Mo’ Money soundtrack. This remix album peaked at number 189 on the Billboard 200. In November 1993, Time and Chance were released. With high expectations from producers and a lack of band unity and teamwork, the Color Me Badd started losing confidence. During that time, they made a contract with Epic Records. With Epic, the band’s fourth studio album, Awakening, was released on 28th July 1998. Abrams started developing alcohol issues, and the newly married Thornton decided to pursue the ministry and left. On the other hand, Watters wanted to write and produce his creation. The only members left were Abrams and Calderon.
After the band dissolved, Mark worked with Stevie Brock, “All 4 Love” was the output and reached number 1 on the Disney chart. He then signed with Wright Entertainment and sang songs like House and Knight Rider on the T.V. series. During this time, he got married.

In 2012, Bryan and Mark collaborated with the Insane Clown Posse. The Color Me Badd released “Skywalkin,” the first song after almost 15 years. On 16th August 2013, Bryan left the group and Mark and Kevin replaced Martin Kember with Bryan. The band at B.E.T. Awards in 2014 gave lineup performances in Calderon, Thornton and Kember.
In 2015, Bryan and Mark reunited in the group, excluding Kevin and Martin and began a tour in Singapore. By 2016 the group had Bryan, Mark and Adam record a new song, “In Case You Didn’t Know,” and later performed a concert for U.S. Armed Forces in Okinawa, Japan.
On 22nd July 2018, an incident on stage in a concert in Waterloo, New York, made Bryan arrested for assaulting Mark. Officers confirmed that Bryan had alcohol. In August 2019, this band also performed at a charity event to benefit Generosity Water at Beverly Hills.
