Ty started playing for a local club in Bryan. He played on the Bryan school team and then at Texas A&M University. Along with his degree, Ty played from 1999 to 2002 in the Texas A&M Aggies football team. He played in the defensive line in his career.
In 2003, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and his talent spotter were so impressed by Ty’s college performance that they made a full effort to get him at no. 13 in the 1st round of the 2003 NFL Draft. Ty played for the New England Patriots from 2003-2010. Ty played in 16 games in the 2003 season. He recorded 33 tackles and one sack. Ty collected his first career sack in the 1st quarter of the Patriots’ 19-13 when he sacked Miami Dolphins quarterback Jay Fiedler.
In the 2004 season, Ty played in all 16 games. He was a starter at the defensive end for the Patriots. This season recorded 48 tackles and 3.5 sacks. In 2005 in all 16 games picked up 68 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Then in 2006, he improved and made a career-high record of 84 tackles (56 solos), one safety, and 7.5 sacks. 2007 he was elected as team captain before the season of that year, and in August, he signed a 5-year contract with the Patriots. In the 2007 season, Ty ranked 2nd in the team for tackles (83), quarterback hits (15), and fumble recoveries (3). Solely he made four sacks.
Ty’s 2008 and 2009 seasons faced his health issues. He had an injury, so he did 13 games in 2008 and completed the season with 41 tackles and two sacks. In 2009 he underwent surgery for a groin injury repair and surgery for a sports hernia injury also.
