On March 9, 1997, around 12:30 a.m., Wallace and his entourage attended an after-party thrown by Vibe and Qwest Records at the Petersen Automotive Museum following the 11th Annual Soul Train Music Awards in Los Angeles departed in two GMC Suburbans. They headed back to his hotel due to congestion.

At 12:45 a.m., when every lane was in use, a black Chevrolet Impala came up next to Wallace’s Suburbans, and an unnamed African-American man grabbed a 9 mm blue-steel handgun and shot at Wallace’s vehicle. He was taken to Cedars-Sinai immediately, but he was declared dead at 1:15 a.m. During an interview in February 1997, he said he had hired bodyguards because he was afraid for his life; a month later, his fears were realized when he was murdered.

The postmortem results, made public 15 years after his death, revealed that the deadly shot was the fourth and last one, which went via his right hip and continued through his colon, liver, heart, and left lung before halting in his left shoulder. On March 18, 1997, his body was cremated, and his ashes were delivered to his family during a memorial service conducted at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel in Manhattan.
