On September 30, 2007, Robert was hospitalized in Las Vegas, where a rare but rapidly progressive and potentially deadly condition was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
After being found that he would not survive without a lung transplant, he was transferred to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, on October 13, 2007.
On the evening of October 30, 2007, during the wait for a lung transplant, Goulet died of pulmonary fibrosis at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre. At that time, he was 73.
