PEN15 Season 2 returns on Hulu with Glorious Episodes

Teen’s life is in a beautiful stage at the age of 13–19 years. They are developing physically, mentally, and emotionally while identifying their identities and values that will carry them through their adulthood. This can also be a confusing time for them, as they are trying to understand the changes. And Pen15 represents this moment of life in a very lively and exciting way. 

An American web television series Pen15, a cringe comedy, produced by Maya Erskine, Anna Konkle, and Sam Zvimbleman, which premiered on February 8, 2019, in Hulu. The PrimeTime Emmy nominated show returned on September 18 with its season 2. As we’ve all seen ten episodes in the previous season, this time, the show’s makers split the season into two parts as per viewer’s interest. Both leads, Maya and Anna, are 31 years old women in real, playing their 13-years old real versions. The season 2 first half premiered on September 18, 2020, and the next one is expected to arrive soon.

On Rotten Tomatoes, season 1 holds a “Certified Fresh” 93% rating with an 8.04 average rating as well the new season received an average rating of 8.63/10 and got 7.9 on IMDB. The season 1 was nominated for PrimeTime Emmy and awarded Gotham Awards.

The story of Pen15 is about the rare and strange experiences of teenagers. Also refers to that phase of life, which evokes humor with the honesty and curiosity of two girls during their growing up period. That’s why many viewers, mainly juveniles, feel connected with the series. 

Pen15 Season 2 Cast : Who will be in?

Maya Erskine (best known for Maggie in ‘Man Seeking Woman’) appears as Maya Ishii-Peters is a 13-year-old girl of seventh grade; who’s BFF is Anna Konkle as Anna Kone (Milly Izikoff in ‘Rosewood’) is the school’s good singer, also survive her life with music. She is more mature than Maya; she also deals with her parent’s divorce. 

The rest of the characters are Mutsuko Erskine (real mother of Maya Erskine) as Yuki Ishii-Peters, also plays as Maya’s mother; Taj Cross as Sam Zablowski, a low-level antagonist of both BFF’s; Melora Walters as Kathy Kone, Anna’s Mother who separated with her husband; Taylor Nichols as Curtis Kone, Anna’s Father; Jonah Beres as Brandt who found with girls at end of season 1, Anna Pniowsky as Heather, the one who affects Maya and Anna’s friendship.

Erskine and Konkle are the stars of the show, who are executive producers with Sam Zvibleman, Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone, Becky Sloviter, Marc Provissiero, Brooke Pobjoy, Debbie Liebling, and Gabe Liedman.

Pen15 Season 2 Parental guidance :

The cranky comedy show explores the awkwardness of teen girlhood hilariously. The girls are figuring out how to adjust the changing bodies while growing up. Also, experimenting sexually and doing R-rated things, making it more difficult for younger viewers to watch it. If the real 13-year-old girls were to play the role of Maya and Anna, would the show have been on another level? Does someone’s actual age affect how we look at them? As per TV-MA rating, the series isn’t children viewing. Of course, you will know your child’s best and how they can react to the show.

I recommend you to allow elderly teens (more than 17 years old) to watch this show. Consider the points before allowing them:

There’s a plentiful bashing that is found in Pen15. The depiction of sexual matters is more in season 2 than season 1. The girls also face body shaming, peer pressure, bullying, and influence from others. Scenes involve teens smoking cigarettes and drinking. It has many moments that might surprise you; even Pen15 also could help teens to explore their teen matters.

Pen15 Season 2  Episodes and Spoilers :

The first season of Pen15 presented BFFs who deal with the weirdness of teens. The second part started from where the first part ended. 

At the end of season 1, Maya and Anna both share an inglorious moment with Maya’s crush Brandt in the janitor’s closet during a middle-school dance. Pen15 shows the dark side of adolescence. Erskine told EW, “We’re going to explore more mature, darker content in the second season. The girls will possibly experiment more.” 

Episode 1st and 2nd:

Season 2 starts with two days after the dance, Maya and Anna are in a pool party and clears all the mess or drama between each other. They are unexpectedly broadcasting the closet scene, among others, but Brandt doesn’t show any interest. Now everyone thinks both are ‘Desperate Sluts’. At that time, they realize how those girls dealt when they called them sluts. Maya stalks her crush and wants to join wrestling, but she disheartened when someone mocked her body. While on the phone, the two did an unexpected, weird act. At that time, Anna is dealing with her parents breaking relationship. 

Episode 3rd:

Together Anna and Maya watch horror movies, and they hear anna’s parents’ argument of divorce. They ran out of that place and imagining secret powers within and want to control their life’s harsh times through magic. Whereas it’s a heartbreaking moment, as their wishes are not fulfilled, and they are powerless. 

Episode 4th and 5th:

After school, Anna and Maya are invited by Maura to her house. Maura is a very strange character; she wants to make herself a 3rd best friend. BFFs are unaware of Maura’s intention. They also enjoy sleepovers nights with lots of secrets and shopping trips with their mothers. Moreover, surviving the embarrassing memories of an adolescent. Maura extends her influence to come among them. At the episodes last, both teens are with each other.

Episode 6th: 

In this episode, the cast announces for the school play. Maya selected for play mains. She gets an opportunity to kiss her co-star Gabe on the play. Gabe proposes her as a girlfriend, and she accepts. Meanwhile, Anna works as a stage manager on the play and finds herself.

Episode 7th:

In season 2, part 1 ends with a big disaster. Both of them are broken, One’s first break up and the other’s family is falling apart. Life has come to a different stage in both of their lives. 

Pen15 Season 2 Second Part Plot : What will happen in it?

In the next part of season 2, we will see what will happen in their lives. How much do they learn from their juveniles experiences? How do they manage themselves? 

All viewers who love to watch this show will know that Anna will be able to choose one of her parents. So, will Maya forget Gabe, with whom she was dreamed of her first kiss? Will she be able to forgive him? In the next part, we will see what challenges these girls would go through and how they respond to them.
