Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons, who also trained for his mother’s Wheatley Stable, was the first of four Hall of Fame trainers to work with Phipps’ horses. Eddie Neloy took up training Fitzsimmons after his retirement in 1966, followed by Bill Winfrey, then by Bill Winfrey again in 1963 and then by Eddie Neloy again in 1966, before John Russell took over in 1973, followed by Angel Penna, Sr in 1977, and finally by Shug McGaughey in 1985.
