University of Alabama basketball player Darius Miles, 21 years old, has been arrested on Monday and charged with murder after a shooting incident that took place near the University campus on Sunday, which left a woman, 23 years old, dead; the Tuscaloosa law enforcement announced.
Immediately after the arrest, the University of Alabama athletics department stated that after they were made aware of the charges against Darius Miles, a student-athlete, he was no longer a player on the Alabama men’s basketball team.
Michael Lynn Davis, 20 years old, has also been charged in the shooting incident, the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes department said in a release. Both suspect’s students are charged with capital murder and are being held without bond.
Investigators said Darius is the only person connected to the University of Alabama. However, it is still uncertain whether the suspects have attorneys.
According to a statement, the shooting on Sunday took place around 1:45 a.m. local time and found that Jamea Jonae Harris (the victim) had been shot. She was killed while sitting in a car not more than half a mile from the University’s campus.
The driver said that someone had shot into his car and said he returned fire in self-defense; investigators said he possibly struck 1 of the suspects. Further, after analyzing the scenes, speaking with several witnesses, and viewing video surveillance, 2 suspects were developed.
It was concluded that there was only a minor argument between these groups, where the victim and students were out on the Strip. This is a hub of restaurants and businesses near the university campus.
