Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas wins the third term challenge on Tuesday from Beto O’Rourke. Beto is a former congressman from El Paso. The win was comfortable, with Grey at 55.3%, to 43.5% for Beto. 

Both the candidates were heavyweight political challengers with significant fund-raising ability and huge support in their parties. Both parties sparred a lot on the airwaves, on computer screens, and in mailboxes across the state for months. The election campaigns cost around $170 million, excluding the amount spent by outside groups.

Greg, formerly the state’s attorney general, was first elected governor (2014). His campaign mainly emphasized Texas business and his efforts to take more state control over federal immigration and border security, which included using state police to arrest migrants on misdemeanor charges.

Beto’s campaign focused on the state’s abortion ban total and the school shooting in Uvalde. In addition, he also targeted the February 2021 governor failure of the electrical grid that killed hundreds due to an unusual week of freezing temperatures.

Beto was born on 26th September 1972 in El Paso, Texas. He has Irish, English, Scottish, German, and Welsh ancestry. “Beto” is the nickname given by his family. During Beto’s college years, he formed a band named Band. 

Beto currently resides with his family in a mission-style house in the Sunset Heights area of El Paso. This house has a history linked to General Hugh Scott and Pancho Villa met there long back in 1915.

On 19th May 1995, he and his friends sneaked out of the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) through the fence and were arrested by the UTEP police for theft. Beto was in jail overnight and the following day was released after bail. Later UTEP decided not to press charges for theft. 

O’Rourke was arrested for drunk driving after a car crash on 27th September 1998. The charges were dismissed the following year after he completed a court-recommended DWI program.

Beto O’Rourke Career:

During his childhood, Beto accompanied his father at campaign stops and several other political events. He was inspired by the mayoral run of Ray Caballero (2001), and later, when Caballero was not re-elected, Beto considered running for office.

In mid-2005, Beto ran for the El Paso City Council on the plan of downtown development and border reform. He defeated City Councilman Anthony Cobos, and Beto is one of the youngest representatives to have served on the City Council. During his first term, Beto supported a plan to develop a depressed region of El Paso into a business district. After two years, in 2007, he won re-election to a 2nd term, defeating Trini Acevedo.

On 14th June 2005, at his first city council meeting, Beto was selected as mayor pro tem by united vote. On 20th June 2006, he renounced the position and said that a new mayor pro tem should be elected yearly.

Further, during his bid for re-election in the fall of 2014, Beto donated around $28,000 from his campaign funds to fellow Democratic candidates for House seats. In 2014, he was re-elected with 67 percent of the vote.

On 15th November 2021, in the 2022 gubernatorial election, Beto announced his bid for Governor of Texas and was standing against Republican Greg Abbott. On 1st March 2022, Beto won the Democratic nomination for governor. 


Beto, since college, had a brief music career and joined his first band, Swipe, in New York. During his days in New York, he learned to play musical instruments and performed in many shows. In 1991, in the summer, while at Columbia University, Beto, along with the band Foss, toured the United States and Canada and garnered the support of Feist. In 1993, the group released a self-titled demo and a “The El Paso Pussycats” record on Western Breed Records.

Beto also played drums in the band Swedes and released an album, Summer, in 1995. Further, he and his ex-members of Foss started two other bands, a rock group Fragile Gang, and a cover band, The Sheeps.


After graduation, Beto did many jobs as a live-in caretaker and art mover and later started working for his uncle’s office, “An Internet service provider .”Further, he worked as a proofreader at H. W. Wilson Company and wrote songs and short stories in his free time.

In 1988, after returning to El Paso, she again did small jobs. In 2000, Beto co-founded Stanton Street Technology Group, its Internet services, and software company, and until 2017, his wife, Amy, operated the business.
