Southpaw Plot: What is It All About?
Professional boxer Billy “The Great” Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) and his wife Maureen (Rachel McAdams), and daughter Leila (Madison Ivey Lannister) live in New York City. Hope is the current Light Heavyweight champion and has a perfect 42-0 record (Oona Laurence). While watching Billy’s fight against Darius Jones at Madison Square Garden, Maureen becomes visibly alarmed after he gets numerous brutal blows to the face, causing blood to pour profusely from his eye. Although he was badly hurt, Billy won the light heavyweight championship bout via knockout and kept his title.
Billy starts drinking and using drugs. When Billy discusses his money woes with his friend Jordan, Jordan proposes that Billy sell the house. After that, Jordan sets Billy up with a bout against Kalil Turay, in which Billy is punched so hard that his corner quits. In his confusion, Billy takes a headshot to the face and mistakenly headbutts the referee. Billy owes the referee and the network money, but he is suspended for a year and can’t work to pay it off. His home and possessions have been taken from him. Jordan and his longtime trainer Eli Frost have left him for Miguel.
Tick tells Billy that Hoppy was killed by his father while defending his mother from the aggressor. Though saddened by his inability to save Hoppy, Tick offers his assistance to Billy as he prepares for the forthcoming bout. The judge recognizes Billy’s positive changes and re-united with Leila. When Billy and Leila go to see Maureen’s grave, she asks if she may stay with her, and he tells her he will fight again.
Angela takes Leila into the locker room to watch the bout with her on fight night. In the beginning stages of the match, Miguel gains the advantage. Round every round, the two warriors exchange ferocious blows. Meanwhile, Miguel insults Maureen, throwing Billy off his game. Billy, in a flash of wrath, strikes out and almost puts an end to the struggle. Billy, Tick warns, must not give Miguel that kind of power over him. Billy learns to manage his rage and beats Miguel in the final round.
