Apart from the regular star films, there were some smaller ones that really stood out for their content, acting and story-telling. Here’s a look at 10 Tamil movies 2015 you must watch in case you missed their release.
Kaakkaa Muttai
It is all about the life and times of two kids Periya Kakka Muttai (Vignesh) and his younger brother Chinna Kaaka Muttai (Ramesh) growing up in a slum, who make their living stealing coal from the railway yard. Their father is in the jail while mother (Ishwarya Rajesh) brings them up. The urchins have their own dreams like any other kids and here, they want to try out a Pizza from the newly opened Pizza shop. Their curiosity about pizza is because, the new shop is opened by Tamil star Silambarasan. They decide that by hook or crook, they will gain entry into the upmarket Pizza shop and have a slice of it with their own money. Will they succeed in their attempt ?
‘I’
Coming from the proven combo of Shankar and Vikram the film had humungous promotions and Vikram’s commitment to reduce and increase body weight for the three drastically different getups he sported in the film, became a talking point even before the release of the film. Post release the film drew mixed reviews. Critics felt that the script did not match the standards set by a maverick filmmaker Shankar. However Vikram’s extraordinary performance and technical brilliance made kept the audience hooked and the film become a blockbuster.
Baahubali
SS Rajamouli’s larger-than-life film had everything one could ask for – great performances, a gripping story, love, action and oh yes, eye candy. Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty, Tamannaah and Sathyaraj star in the film. The BGM and songs by MM Keeravani were a major plus as was the brilliant cinematography. You must watch Baahubali: The beginning before the second part is released.
Indru Netru Naalai
This science fiction film is also by a debut director R Ravi Kumar. Vishnu Vishal, Mia George and Karunakaran play the lead roles. Written in a very humorous way, the film is about the lives of two men who discover a time machine. The cinematography has to be appreciated here. What happens in their quest? Be ready for a fun-filled ride!
Kuttram Kadithal
A film with a social message, Kutram Kadithal by debutant director Bramma G is one that is a must-watch for parents and teachers. Master Ajay, Radhika Prasidhha and Sai Rajkumar essay the lead roles. The story is simple – a teacher slaps a child over an incident and it changes her life. The National award-winning movie may have its flaws, but it teaches you some things about life.
Thani Oruvan
Mohan Raja came up with his first non-remake film. The film was not on the most expected list until the first trailer released. But after a neatly cut promising trailer created a positive buzz towards the film. When it was released this was a stupendous surprise for everyone. The film made with the first original script of Raja ably supporter by writer duo Suba’s dialogues is easily one of the top ten brilliant commercial thriller ever made in Tamil cinema. The effect of the film was such that within two days of its release social media users created memes stating that Jayam Ravi the lead hero of the film should henceforth be called as ‘Thani Oruvan’ Ravi. Arvind Swamy played the most suave and clever villain that was equally loved as the hero. Reviewers unanimously hailed the film and that reflected in the box office result.
Enakkul Oruvan
A man suffering from Insomnia gets introduced to pills that allow him to cultivate and experience lucid dreams that could continue with interruptions too. With each real-life character that has caused an impact in him getting a parallel in his dream, the distinction between reality & dream thins out and that consumes him. The final act on how he gets out of it brings the curtains down with a wonderful little perspective brought to note.
Naanum Rowdy Dhaan
Be ready to be thoroughly entertained with this film. Directed by Vignesh Shivan, the movie starring Nayanthara, Vijaysethupathi and RJ Balaji, is filled with dark humour and it keeps you laughing for the most part. One of the few Tamil films in 2015 that was total paisa vasool.
Papanasam
When it was announced that Kamal Haasan would be starring in the Tamil remake of ‘Malayalam blockbuster ‘Drishyam’ there were cynical voices which said that Kamal’s brilliance and creative interference will spoil the simplicity of George Kutti character played by Mohan Lal.
But the legend proved he is not someone who will fall into the guesses of naysayers. ‘Papanasam’ the Tamil version of ‘Drishyam’ was true to the original and there was minor changes made to the lead character to suit the local flavour. Suyambulingam (Kamal) was as relatable and brilliant as George Kutti an uneducated yet a clever middle class family head.
Maya
This is the film that broke the myth that heroine centric film would not find its takers among all section of audiences. This genuine horror flick directed by Ashwin Srikanth with Nayanthara being the only star performer achieved a miraculous 50 day run at the box office at the time when films with glittery of stars were running out of the theatres in a week or two.
