Mike LaFleur Anticiptated to Join Sean McVay’s Staff After Jets Exit
The New York Jets have shown they know how to perform a spin move over the last 2 days.
Jets coach Robert Saleh insisted on Thursday that the team allowed offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur to pursue other opportunities rather than simply saying the team fired him. It is extremely hard to believe.
Robert said that some teams have been inquiring about Mike’s availability for a few days, and it will be good for everyone to pursue those opportunities.
The Jets decided to dump Mike after the offense fell apart down the stretch and failed to score a touchdown in the final 3 games. He will surely get another job, but it will take more work to get one up from the offensive coordinator, or likely.
There is a belief in the NFL that Jets owner Woody Johnson told Robert to fire Mike. Woody said he had no input on the decision to fire Mike. Robert said Woody gives him full power to make decisions along with Joe Douglas, the general manager.
Two years back, Robert brought Mike with him from San Francisco. They both know each other for nearly 20 years, and Robert is best friends with Matt LaFleur, Mike’s elder brother (the coach of the Packers).
As for Mike’s replacement, Robert said he would put a wide net and that the new coordinator doesn’t have to run the Shanahan scheme that Mike and Robert brought with him from San Francisco.
Robert insisted this was an attractive job and with the coaching staff entering a break season. He pointed to the defensive success and the skilled offensive players as positives. Robert also added that they are ready to attack and ensure we do everything to satisfy that position.
