The new Matlock is a remake of Andy Griffith’s original sitcom of the same name, which first aired on NBC from 1986 to 1992 before shifting to ABC. The sitcom centred on the titular character, Ben Matlock, an elderly, cantankerous, but overall pleasant lawyer who, in addition to his regular business, was constantly thrust into the lives and cases of others around him.
The show spawned several spinoffs, including Jake and the Fatman, starring William Conrad and Joe Penny in 1987, and Diagnosis Murder, starring Dick Van Dyke, which ran much longer and was a fan favourite.
