The model and TV personality said it was something she had “always known” but never spoken about publicly.
In a tearful Instagram post on Wednesday, she stated, “I’m sorry if this is triggering.”
Teigen, who has two children with singer John Legend, said she had chosen to share her story in light of recent US legislation.
She said: “I have never been more scared or protected. I love you, baby. You are strong and safe and loved.”
Teigen has been outspoken about her experience with pregnancy loss before. In September, she penned an essay for Glamor magazine about her “grief and pain.”
“I am so grateful for our children. But I also understand how it feels to have a child you cannot bring home,” she wrote.
“To carry them, day after day, knowing they will never be on this earth.”
Teigen said she had decided to share her story to help others who had been through similar experiences.
“We all have to make decisions we think are best for our families,” she wrote.
“I know this might not be right for everyone, but it is not my story to keep silent.”
Teigen’s post comes amid a renewed debate about abortion in the US after several states passed restrictive new laws.
Last week, the governor of Alabama approved a law that would ban almost all abortions, including in cases of rape and incest.
Other states, including Georgia and Ohio, have also passed laws that would make it illegal to have an abortion after a certain point in a pregnancy.
The laws are not currently in effect and are expected to face legal challenges.
Teigen is not the only celebrity to speak out about abortion this week.
On Tuesday, actress Busy Philipps testified before the US Congress to support a bill that would codify Roe v Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion.
Philipps, who had an abortion at 15, said: “This is something that’s happened to so many women in this country.”
“I’m sharing this experience with you since I am also one of those women,” she added.
