On April 9, 2014, Joel Embiid submitted his name for the 2014 NBA Draft. Six days after declaring, he was chosen by the Philadelphia 76ers as the third overall pick. On August 26, 2014, he agreed to a rookie deal with the 76ers. He could not play in the 2014–15 season due to an injury. He also did not play in the 2015–16 season since his recovery did not go as planned, and he had to have another surgery.
