Freedom for India was brought after a great struggle. There are a huge number of people who fought for freedom. Usually we think only Gandhi, Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose and some other person fought for freedom. But there are some unknown freedom fighters who disappeared in the page of history.


Here I have revealed the top 10 unknown freedom fighters who disappeared in the page of history.

1. Matangini Hazra

Matangini Hazra was born on 19 October 1870.She was an Indian revolutionary who participated in the Indian independence movement. She was part of Quit India movement and Non-Corporation movement. During one procession, she was shot by the British police in front of the Tamluk police station on 29 September 1942. Even after being shot thrice, she continued marching despite of her wound with the Indian flag. She kept shouting “Vande Mataram”. She died with the Indian National Congress flag held high and still flying. The First Statue of a woman put up in Kolkata, in independence India was Hazra’s in 1977.A statue now stands at the spot where she was killed in Tamluk.

2. Begum Hazrat Mahal

Begum Hazrat Mahal is also known as Begum of Awadh. She was Born on 1820.In 1857,she rebelled against the British East India company during the Indian Rebellion.After her husband exiled to Calcutta. she took charge of the affairs in the state of Awadh and seized the control of Lucknow during the rebellion. Later Begum had to retreat to Nepal, where she died in 1879.On 15 August 1962, Begum was honoured at the old Victoria park in Hazratganj. On 10 May 1984, the government of India issued a commemorative stamp in honour of Begum.

3. Senapati Bapat

Pandurang Mahadev Bapat popularly known as Senapati Bapat born on 12 November 1880.Senapati Bapat was an important figure in the Indian Independence movement. As he was leader of the Mulshi Satyagraha got the title of Senapati. From 1921 Senapati led the three -year farmer’s protest against the construction of the Mulshi Dam by Tata company. On 15 August 1947-Indian Independence Day-Senapati was given the honour of raising the Indian flag over the Pune city for the first time. He died on 28 November 1967.

4. Aruna Asaf Ali

Aruna Asaf Ali was born on 16 July 1909.She was an Indian Independence activist. Aruna Asaf Ali becomes an active member of congress party after her marriage. She also participated in public processions during the Salt Satyagraha. In 1942, she hosted the Indian National Congress Flag during the quit India movement. She died on 29 July 1996.

5. Potti Sreeramulu

Potti Sreeramulu was born on 16 March 1901.He was an Indian revolutionary. He was a follower of Mahatma Gandhi. He worked for humanitarian causes, including support for the Dalit community.”After seeing Potti Sreeramulu dedication towards humanitarian purposes and the nation, Gandhi said: “If only I have eleven more followers like Sriramulu, I will win freedom in a year.He died on 15 December 1952.
