Tony is the son of a former boxer who learned boxing skills while growing up in Sacramento. He was discovered for his raw talents while in the gym with his brother and was soon one of the elite amateur boxers in the country. After nine years as a learner, Tony was a polished boxer, unlike the over-anxious ten-year-old boy who had his first-ever fight in Reno, Nevada.    

In 1983, Tony gave an impressive KO in the first round and the first minute. His second professional fight was at Memorial Auditorium. That night Hank Renner, famous Sacramento ring announcer and voice of Big Time Wrestling, gave tony and the crowd presents a shocking ring introduction. He announced Tony as Tony “The Tiger” Lopez.  

​Further, Tony is a three-time World Boxing Champion and is the most notable and recognizable boxer in Sacramento. He was a fighter in the ring and was famous for his superior punching power. His classic matches at the Memorial Auditorium and Arco Arena were the highest-grossing bouts in the history of Sacramento. 

Tony has given remarkable ​two victories, the first in 1988 over Rocky Lockridge in “Ring Fight of the Year,” which was televised nationally. The other was in October 1992, when he beat Joey Gamache for the WBA Lightweight title.  

Other remarkable victories were wins over John John Molina, Tyrone Jackson, Dingaan Thobela, Greg Haugen, Jorge Paez, and Joey Gamache. Tony fought some of the strongest fighters in history, like a war with six-time World Champion and Hall of Famer Julio Caesar Chavez, undefeated Brian Mitchell, and former champ and Olympian Charles Murray.  

When Tony retired, he decided to utilize his talents and give back to his hometown. In “the Sacramento community,” he trains and works with the up-and-coming amateur boxers; and gives his time to local community events. Since 2000, Tony has owned a bail bonds company in Sacramento. 

In his entire 16 years of boxer career, Tony has won three times World Champion​, two times IBF Super Featherweight Champion​, and WBA Lightweight Champion. He has also been named in the ring magazine “Comeback of the Year fighter for 1990”. In 2011, Tony was inducted into the California Hall of Fame and the Sacramento Sports Hall of Fame.
