Roman Josi Career:

In 2006, Roman began his professional ice hockey career with SC Bern. Later, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, the Nashville Predators selected him in the second round, 38th overall. After spending two seasons with the club NLB team, Roman became a full-time member of Bern during the 2007–08 season. In 2010, he won a National League A championship. Further, he joined the Predators’ organization during the 2010–11 season and spent the entire year with a professional ice hockey team, ‘The Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League.’

On 10th December 2011, he scored his first NHL goal against Dan Ellis of the Anaheim Ducks. Then the 2012–13 season began with his youth team, SC Bern, considering the NHL lockout. During the season, he played along with NHL stars Mark Streit and John Tavares. Later, as the lockout resolved, he returned to play with the Predators and on 25th February 2013, Roman scored a career-high four points (two goals and two assists) win against the Dallas Stars. 

During the 2014–15 season, Roman had a career-high year and ranked fifth among defensemen in scoring, finishing with a then-career-high of 55 points. By the end of the season, he was in the top five for the Norris Trophy vote. Later during the 2015–16 season, in the 2016 NHL All-Star Game, he and his teammates James Neal, Shea Weber and Pekka Rinne were selected to play. Later, he was again in the top five for the Norris Trophy vote. 

During the 2016–17 season, Roman and James Neal were selected as an alternate captains. Roman’s defensive skill was important in the Predators’ 2017 Stanley Cup playoffs run. Despite being placed on long-term injury reserve in January, he ended the season with 12 goals and 49 points. On 19th September 2017, before the 2017–18 season, he was named the seventh captain in Predators history. Later On 29th October 2019, Roman signed an eight-year contract extension with the Predators and $72.472 million. 

As the captain, he was very active in the community too. In Nashville, Roman has a partnership with the Best Buddies program, and they give tickets for each game to local kids with special needs. Further has also attended the Best Buddies prom and gala with these kids.

In 2020, Roman won the James Norris Memorial Trophy becoming the first Predators player and first-ever Swiss to win this award. On 7th April 2022, he broke Paul Kariya’s previous record (85 in 2005–06) and recorded three assists while scoring his 87th point. With the record, he also becomes the Predators’ single-season points leader in a 3–2 win against the Ottawa Senators. His 2021–22 season finished with 96 points, becoming the first defenseman to score 90 points in a single season. To felicitate his achievements, he was again on the final list for the Norris Trophy and, for the first time, was a finalist for the Ted Lindsay Award. This award is given to the league’s most outstanding player by the NHL Player’s association. Further, he was in voting for awards like Norris, albeit and the Hart Memorial Trophy.        

At the 2010 Winter Olympics, Roman played for the Switzerland team. Previously, he represented Switzerland at the 2009 Ice Hockey World Championship; Then in 2007, 2008 and 2009 IIHF World U20 Championship and the 2007 and 2008 IIHF World U18 Championships. Later, in Stockholm, Sweden, at the 2013 IIHF World Championship, he was selected as the tournament MVP. Then at the 2016 World Cup, Roman represented Team Europe. He won a second silver medal with Switzerland at Denmark’s 2018 IIHF World Championship.
