Jonny Pierce and Jacob Graham are the founding members of the Drum band; they became friends as children after a meeting at Bible camp at the age of 11 or 12. After some years, they formed an electro-pop group named Goat Explosion, then renamed Elkland. In 2005, they released one album, Golden, and it garnered interest with the single “Apart” from the album. This group was a short-lived one. 

Later in 2008, Jonny and Jacob thought of a concept for The Drums. Jonny moved to Kissimmee, Florida, where Jacob resided, so they could collaborate nicely on this new concept. Further, in the 2009 spring, both moved to Brooklyn, where Connor Hanwick, a drummer and Adam Kessler, a former Elkland guitarist, joined the band to complete their live sound. The formed band made their first gig within a week of arriving in Brooklyn at Cake Shop NYC, a part of the NYC Pop Fest. 

In October 2009, Summertime! The band released it as their first EP. The same year in December, the band was shortlisted for the BBC Sound of 2010 as one of the 15 music acts. On 4th January 2010, the Drums were placed at No. 5 on this list. 

In February 2010, the band performed around the UK on the 2010 NME Awards Tour, alongside The Maccabees, Bombay Bicycle Club and The Big Pink. All bands played as support in the Cosmic Love tour for Florence and the Machine’s 2010. In June 2010, the drums played as one of the support bands for Kings of Leon in Hyde Park, London.

On 7th May 2010, the band appeared on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, where they performed “Best Friend.” Further, on 7th June 2010, their debut album was officially released on Moshi Moshi and Island Records. The Debut album included the singles like “Let’s Go Surfing,” “Best Friend,” “Me and the Moon,” “Forever and Ever, Amen,” and “Down By The Water.” This single, “Down By The Water.” was previously released as part of the band’s Summertime! EP.

On 16th September 2010, an announcement was made that guitarist Adam Kessler had left the band. Later on, 11the April 2011, the drums released a single, “The New World,” with proceeds going to Japan disaster relief efforts. 

As their second LP, on 5th September 2011, the band released Portamento. Further, due to stylistic disagreements, the band almost split at the end of June. The same year, Jonny co-wrote “In The Middle (I Met You There)” with Brooklyn artist Matthew Dear for his EP Headcage. His writing credits also include singles like “You Gave Me Nothing” and “Lose It (In the End),” which were later included on Mark Ronson’s album Record Collection.

In late 2012, Portamento’s world tour ended, and the founding member Connor Hanwick left the group. In November 2012, Jonny announced he would release a solo album in 2013. The Drums continued with members Jonny and Jacob. Later, on 15th February 2012, the band made their American television debut on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. In May of the same year, MTV gave the band a celebrity chart special on the MTV HD channel. Jonny and Jacob introduced their favorite videos and bands along with their videos. 

On 16th February 2014, the band posted on their official Facebook page that their work on album three had finished. On 17th July 2014, they announced that their third studio album, ‘Encyclopedia,’ would be released on 23rd September 2014. On 20th August 2014, the band released their new single, “I Can’t Pretend.” 

Further, on 1st March 2017, they released their debut single, “Blood Under My Belt,” from the album Abysmal Thoughts of 2017. Frontman Jonny took full credit for writing and producing the album through a Facebook post. Later, Jacob announced on Instagram that he had left The Drums. 

On 16th June 2017, the fourth album was released on ANTI. Further, on 5th April 2019, the Drums released their fifth album, Brutalism. On 11th December 2020, a 3-track titled “Ambulance,” in which Johnny appeared as a single artist and was released by the Drums.
