Benjamin Eric Sasse is an American politician and academic administrator; he has served as the junior United States senator for Nebraska since 2015. Ben is also a member of the Republican Party.

Ben has taught at the University of Texas and served as an assistant secretary at the U.S. Department (of Health and Human Services). Ben, in 2010 was named the 15th president of Midland University in Fremont, Nebraska.

In 2014, Ben ran for a vacant seat in the U.S. Senate. He defeated David Domina, an Democratic nominee, by 65% to 31%. Ben has also worked as the youngest chief executive and vice president of finance in American higher education.

In 2020, Ben was reelected to a second term. On 13th February 2021, he was one of seven other Republican politicians to vote to convict Donald Trump of incitement of insurrection in his second impeachment trial.

Ben was born on 22nd February 1972 in Plainview, Nebraska, USA. His baptism ceremony occurred in the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod, and he was raised in a Lutheran. As an undergraduate in the early 1990s, Ben at the Bolton Conference encountered the teachings of W. Robert Godfrey and identified this as the time when he and his wife could first begin to embrace the “reformed faith.”

Later Ben became an elder in the United Reformed Churches in North America and served for Westminster Seminary California on the board of trustees. Further, he is a member of Grace Church, a Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) congregation in Fremont.

Ben and his wife, Melissa (née McLeod) Sasse, met on a Christian mission trip in college, and after getting married, they live in Fremont, Nebraska, along with their children. The couple has three children: Elizabeth, Alexandra, and Breck.  

Due to Ben’s movement around the country, the couple has home-school their children. 

Melissa is a native of Birmingham and was raised on an Air Force base in California. Before marrying Ben, she worked as a high school guidance counselor and taught in New Haven, Connecticut. Melissa is pursuing a doctorate in American history at Yale University.

Ben Sasse Career:

Ben started his career with Boston Consulting Group as an associate consultant. He later used to advise the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on national security issues. Ben served as the Assistant Secretary for Planning and evaluation for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. 

Ben served as the 15th president of Midland University, and he was among the youngest chief executives to take leadership of the immemorial institution. Ben’s grandfather, Elmer Sasse, worked for the university for 33 years as vice president of Finance at Midland University.

During Ben’s tenure as university president, college admissions nearly doubled, and he recovered from his leadership’s various financial and academic difficulties. While serving as the President of Nebraska’s Midland University, Ben taught at the University of Texas-Austin. 

Ben aimed higher and desired politics and pursued the U.S. Senate; therefore, he resigned from his post as president of Midland University in 2014.

Ben was up against Mike Johanns as he announced his intentions to run for the U.S. Senate. A key issue for him was the ACA, and Ben expressed his strong opposition to the Affordable Care Act. He proved his points in a nail-biting debate with Shane Osborn (his primary rival). Shane tried to derail the campaign by criticizing speeches Ben delivered while the bill was being passed. 

Ben managed to win 92 of 93 counties; it was a big feat. He won the nomination from the Republican Party with 49.4% of all votes, and later he would win the general election by defeating David Domina (the Democratic nominee). 

Ben once again proved his mettle in politics in the 2020 election by defeating Chris Janicek from the Democratic party. He got 62.7% of the total votes and became the Junior United States Senator.

Ben was one a few of his colleagues from the Republican Party when he blamed Donald Trump for the attack on Capitol hill, and Trump reciprocated by calling Ben a Republican In Name Only (RINO). He was also a target of a few Twitter posts by Trump until the account was later banned. 

Ben is a member of the intelligence, finance, judiciary, and budget committees and is focused on the future of war, the future of work, and the First Amendment. 

Further, he has written two books one is The Vanishing American Adult and another one is Them: Why We Hate Each Other- and How to Heal. Both books are national best-sellers.

In 2019, Ben introduced the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which was in support of the Senate for protecting babies born after failed abortion attempts.

Ben Sasse Expected to Resign for University of Florida President

On 6th October 2022, the University of Florida’s presidential search committee announced Ben Sasse was the sole finalist to be the university’s 13th president. Further, on 1st November 2022, the university’s board of trustees will discuss the nomination at their board meeting. 

Currently, Ben is a member of the U.S. assembly from Nebraska from the Republican Party. He assumed office on 3rd January 2015, and his current term ends on 3rd January 2027. Ben has been interested in an academic job for quite some time. 

Ben was expected to resign from the Senate and succeed Kent Fuchs as the next president of the University of Florida. The governor of Nebraska will appoint an interim replacement until a special election in 2024 is held to fill the seat and duties for the remainder of his term.

Ben said that he and his wife had been pursued by outstanding institutions for the past two years but were waiting to be a finalist. They added that now the time is different because the University of Florida is different as it is the most interesting university in America right now.
